Minato is an orphan who moves back to his home city Tatsumi Port Island and into the Iwatodai dorm. It his here that he is attacked by Shadows during a hidden hour between one day and the next and first uses an Evoker (a gun-shaped item that one shoots at their head); he learns of his ability to summon the Personas Orpheus of The Fool Arcana and Thanatos of The Death Arcana. He is asked to join SEES (who operate within the dorm) to assist in investigating the Dark Hour and defeating the Shadows that are causing both major accidents as well as the rapidly spreading disease known as Apathy Syndrome. He is elected as the team's leader in combat, and is unique from his comrades due to his ability to use the Wild Card which allows him to summon and switch between multiple Personas in battle. Eventually, he learns that a Shadow known as "Death" was sealed inside of him during the events that led to his parents' death.

Minato embodies the characteristic trait of ennui.
He's fairly calm, passive, and drowsy the majority of the time. However, he also maintains a morbid, sarcastic sense of humor at times as well as a comically large appetite. While introverted, distant, and aloof (never being seen without his headphones either on his ears or around his neck), he is still blunt, mature, and personable.
In spite of being quiet and occasionally mistaken for being mean, he is a good listener and genuinely interested in others. It is due to his ability to be sharp and quick (all the while being calm) that he is often trusted during intense situations and is considered a good leader. While he tends to care little for himself, he considers bonds and the lives of others as important—even if forming them may bring pain.
